Watercolor and gouache on brown paper depicting the house and fields of Alexander S. Gardiner. Foreground focuses on the edges of two fields, a tilled field to the left and a pasture field to the right, subdivided and bounded by split rail fencing along which the occasional shrub of sapling grows; dirt road beyond running horizontally across the painting, single horse and rider traveling left of center towards the left, single horse drawn cart with two passengers traveling on the far right side towards the left. Midground to the left and center focuses on Gardiner's farm, outbuildings, and various planted fields all bounded by white picket fencing; barns are yellow with black roofing, several workers scattered throughout work to load and unload hay from wagons using pulley systems, several horses, chickens, and empty carts located in the central barnyard; a dirt road extends to the left of the farm area and towards the background, opposite side of the road to the far right features the residential house surrounded by ornamental plantings and shrubbery; further behind the main house are additional farm structures and a barnyard; additional fields beyond planted with saplings. Background shows further fields extending back towards rolling hills in the distance, horizon line meets with cloudy sky two-thirds of the way up the paper. Entire artwork bordered in thin black line and titled beneath "Residence of Alexander S. Gardiner. Greenlawn. L.I."
