Description
Watercolor and gouache on paper of the farmstead and residence of Charles Henry Gardiner. Painting is bisected by a dirt road bounded by white split rail fencing forming an "S" curve that starts low in the midground on the left and finishes high in the midground on the right. Foreground shows brushily painted grass and meadow fields being mown and hayed in the center by two farmers; several horizontal slats of one segment of fencing removed to provide access to the pasture. The mid- and back ground beyond the road shows a collection of various structures, from left to right depicting a cowbarn and barnyard with cows and waterfowl, a collection of outbuildings and a small carriage house, several domestic outbuildings, a story-and-a-half farmhouse with added extension and ornamentally planted front yard, and tilled fields to the far right beyond which a train has just begun to run across the horizon line. Cloudy sky above with strong grey and blue tones mixing with the white.
