Description
Watercolor and gouache on paper presenting a view of the residence of J.C. Hewlett—the view towards the other direction is recorded in "Cold Spring Harbor from the porch of Harbor View", also currently in the collection of The Whaling Museum (89.03.09). Foreground shows intersecting dirt drive and road to the right, bordered by grassy lawns; far left side depicts orchard extending to the background; four people spread out in front yard, one pushing a baby carriage; ornamental plantings throughout; front walkway leading to house features pergola with crawling vines on the right side. Midground focuses on two-and-a-half story residence with large front porch, two people standing and sitting near the front door; emphasis placed on ornamental column brackets around the porch and corbels along the eaves; bay projection to the immediate right of the porch. Background shows cutaway in the hillside to the right, top bordered with white picket fence and wooded landscape beyond; behind the house to the left fades to horizon line; wispy clouds stretch horizonatally across the sky above. Painted en grisaille.
