Large ship sailing from left to right fills most of midgrouns, three longboats tethered to starboard side, several tiny crew members visible in the rigging and on deck. Background to the left, small ship with sails and steam engine visible in the distance; small steamship visible near the horizon to the right; cloudy sky fills upper two thirds of the canvas; the whole picture painted en grisaille.
