The Stores at East Setauket

Watercolor and gouache on white paper showing a view in East Setauket down a street lined with storefronts. Road coming from the right side curves quickly and heads straight to the center left background; right side of the road lined with at least four two-and-a-half story businesses with front porches, illegible signs in front, and variously painted yellow, blue, or white with red roofs, left side of the road populated with fewer, similar structures; left foreground shows shrubbery next to the road with patches of grass behind; right foreground shows a woman traveling towards the left along the curve of the road in a single-horse carriage; man and woman travel in a one-horse carriage next to a single pedestrian in center of image along the straightaway of the road; small picketing rail with some brush at one end in the road to center left. Blue-tinted rolling hills in the background along the horizon, sky above painted a washed blue with white patches for clouds in the center. Watercolor and India ink on paper showing the front of the Setauket Rubber Factory complex. Foreground to left and center shows a grassy field bordered in split rail fencing, man and woman walk along path cutting across one corner of the field; to right side, a dirt road curves around the outside corner of the field's fence, man driving two-horse cart traveling towards the viewer. Midground shows factory buildings with several people walking around outside some of the buildings; two buildings to far left are three- and four-story large brick structures with smoke stacks rising behind them; six additional structures visibile in center and right mid- and background, four buildings in midground all finished with yellow clapboarding and red roofing. India ink and gouache on pink and blue tinted paper depicting seven scenes including a panorama of Setauket Harbor and various buildings in the town, components matted in one frame and would have been elements of a collage originally. Top picture is a panoramic view of Setauket Harbor measuring six inches by eighteen inches; foreground consists of grassy bank with trees lining the waterfront, three figures sitting at bench to the right, dirt road curving through the scene in far left corner, man and woman in single-horse carriage traveling along road, woman and child walking along path to center left; midground depicts waters of the harbor spreading horizontally across, several sailboats and rowboats in center, additional boats moored near wharf to center left, clustered buildings on far bank to left side, larger factory structure atop hill to center left and beyond the wharf, rolling hill to far right with several lone residential structures; several steeples rising in the background above the treeline, rolling hills beyond; sky above awash in grey and white tones; picture labeled center bottom "Setauket. Watercolor and gouache on brown paper giving a view of Setauket and its harbor from an elevated perspective. Foreground depicts haying fields mowed by farmer in the center with two-horse team pulling a sickle bar mower; piles of cut hay cluster the field to the right side, around group of three farmers gathering hay onto cart. Midground comprisde of horizontal, panoramic band showing dirt road with cart and driver to the left side, fields beyond; dwellings or barns positioned in the center-left on the bank of Setauket Harbor; water of the harbor in the center midground that wind back to the right to disappear behind hills; further residential and farm structures scattered throughout the shoreline of the right midground, fields beyond. Background quickly transitions to horizon line and sky, rolling hills visibile in the far distance of the center background; sky above mottled with blue and white pigment creating clouds, brown of paper coming through.in several areas for effect. Watercolor and gouache on beige paper depicting a view of Setauket Harbor. Foreground of picture consists of grassy shoreline; dirt road curving across the bottom left corner and through an opening in a split rail fence; to far right a man and woman with parasol sit on a bench overlooking the water; small coniferous and deciduous trees loosely line the bank of the harbor. Midground depicts the harbor spreading horizontally across the paper, small watercraft spread across the water, single gaff-rigged sloop occupies most of the center space. Background shows far shore of the harbor scattered with trees and structures on grassy rolling hills; hillside to the right side is closer, water of the harbor disappears around its left peninsula to continue on out of sight; center of background appears to depict a proper harborfront with multiple moored boats of various sizes; sky above is tinged with a light blue-purple and highlighted with white clouds and orange pigment.

Watercolor on beige paper with lead pencil highlights depicting a sloop. Foreground depicts choppy water in blue, black, and white pigment. Midground focused on a single-mast sloop pointing to the left, sails furled, towing a small dinghy; Man standing on deck, leaning back on the boom and facing the viewer; smoking pipe with hands tucked into waistband; According to family history this is Charles S. Jones, great-grandfather of Hal Wilson, consigner of the painting to Preservation Long Island; Two ships in the distance behind the sloop, the coastline visible in the background is lightly wooded and painted brushily with green and grey pigment. Clouded sky fills upper two thirds of the painting above the horizon line. Frame and backing are original to the artwork.
