India ink, gouache, and lead pencil on paper showing four view of Birmingham, Connecticut (present-day Derby, Connecticut). Largest view on top shows grassy field in foreground with stone wall extending horizontally across the paper; clustered residences, barns, and outbuildings netsled between trees beyond. Midground features river to the far right extending diagonally towards the center of the horizon line, factories with smoke stacks and other buildings scattered along far riverbank to right side; series of taller buildings clustered in the center of the midground on the far side of the river, bridge extending across river to left of center; several more smoke stacks among the buildings lining a dirt road on far left of midground that runs alongside a canal. Background of wooded rolling hills, center of background shows church steeples rising above treeline, grey clouds in the sky above. Labeled "Birmingham. Conn." below larger panorama. Foreground of rippling water painted in blue, green, and white; man in rowboat with woman holding parasol; small white sailboat, sails furled, moored in the water off the wharf; two-masted schooner moored to wharf in front of pottery building, three men loading ceramicware and tending to the rigging. Far left of midground, edge of the water bounded by stone wall and shrubbery, Carrie E. Brown house and homestead beyond with outbuilding; pottery manufactory to the right consisting of several main interconnected buildings and adjacent structures; two smokestacks produce light smoke and dark smoke, American flag flies prominently; "Brown Brothers Pottery." stenciled on sign across the top of far building; cords of wood stacked around workyard, one man moving wheelbarrow, one man carrying pottery on flat board, one man moving pots to exterior scaffolding, man loading pots onto two horse cart with single driver; dirt road partially visible beneath horizon line, one-horse cart with single driver moving along at a distance; background wooded and brushily paints, possible areas of inpaint that date after Lange, sky mottled blue with darker areas and clouds with white hue.
