Edward Lange, Panorama View of Huntington from Woolsey Avenue, 1990.14

The views in this composite picture were meant to give a visitor a sense of the entire village of Huntington on a single piece of paper. Does it still feel familiar? If you look closely at the artist’s signature, you’ll see that this painting was meant to be photographed. By making additional photographic copies, Lange could market the same view of the village to dozens of people who might have been visiting for the weekend.

Scroll down to the online interactive map to find the same street from which these views were painted. Can you find the same spot Lange stood? Try taking a walk around Main Street to "step into the painting" and see if you can track down the locations of the three smaller views along the top.

While you’re in Huntington, be sure to check out the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building to visit the Huntington Historical Society's History and Decorative Arts Museum! Then head across the street to The Heckscher Museum to see more Long Island artwork!
